Canada Invests $5.4 Million in Mississauga Biofuels
A Mississauga biofuels plant will receive financial support for biodiesel production, thanks to an investment by the Government of Canada.
The Honourable Lisa Raitt, Minister of Natural Resources, announced today that the Methes Energies’ biodiesel plant will receive up to $5.4 million through the ecoENERGY for Biofuels program. This investment will help strengthen the Canadian renewable fuel industry, support job creation and help to stimulate the local economy.
“Our Government is delivering results for families and workers in Mississauga by encouraging clean energy development,” said Minister Raitt. “By investing in this project, we are helping to create and sustain local jobs and economic opportunities now, when they’re needed the most.”
Compared to diesel, biodiesel can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 60 percent on a life-cycle basis. For gasoline, the emissions reduction for grain-based ethanol can be as much as 40 percent.
“Methes Energies is excited to be taking part in building a new Canadian industry,” said John Loewen, President of Methes Energies. “This investment from the Government of Canada will create new sustainable opportunities for the local economy and helps us as Canadians to be leaders in a solution to a global concern.”
The Government of Canada will invest up to $1.5 billion over nine years through the ecoENERGY for Biofuels program. The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan also dedicates $1 billion to the Clean Energy Fund and $1 billion for the Green Infrastructure Fund to provide additional economic stimulus while promoting a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for Canadians.
Renewable energy sources are increasingly becoming part of Canada’s energy mix. To build on this momentum, Minister Raitt is hosting three roundtables — with the provinces and territories, industry, researchers and the financial community — to discuss strategies for securing a strong energy economy in the long term.
The Government of Canada will provide up to $5.4 million in funding over seven years to a biodiesel plant in Mississauga, Ontario. Natural Resources Minister Lisa Raitt said this funding will help sustain local jobs and create economic opportunities for local businesses as well as provide cleaner fuels to reduce Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions.
