Attorney-General Robert McClelland will today join Emergency Services Ministers from the States and Territories in Canberra to debrief on one of the most devastating natural disaster seasons in Australia’s history.
Mr McClelland said he has called the extraordinary meeting of the Ministerial Council of Police and Emergency Management to allow States and Territories to update on the initial assessment of the natural disasters in their jurisdiction.
“The scale of the disaster season Australia experienced over summer is unprecedented,” Mr McClelland said.
“Queensland was devastated by floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi, while Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania experienced floods.
“Western Australia had flooding around the Carnarvon region, severe storms and of course terrible bushfires over the weekend.
“More than two hundred Local Government Areas across Australia are now disaster declared, making these areas eligible for Commonwealth and State assistance under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
“Ministers will also discuss the emergency response including what worked effectively and what areas can be improved, as well as further assistance the Commonwealth or other jurisdictions may be able to provide to help with community recovery.
“Ministers will prioritize areas of further work to assist COAG’s consideration of the National Strategy for Disaster Resilience, which has been endorsed by the Council. The Strategy will be considered by COAG this Sunday.
“The Commonwealth Government will continue to work closely with State Governments and local councils to help rebuild communities that have been affected by these natural disasters.”
