Attorney-General, Robert McClelland and Federal Member for Leichhardt, Jim Turnour, today announced funding of over $460,000 for legal and family services in North Queensland.

“In this year’s Budget the Government injected an additional $154 million into legal assistance services across the country, including over $26 million for Community Legal Centres,” Mr McClelland said.

As part of this investment, the Government will provide:

  • an additional $138,000 for the Cairns Community Legal Centre and North Queensland Women’s Legal Service to partner with the Cairns Family Relationship Centre;
  • an additional $138,000 for the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service and Townsville Community Legal Service to partner with the Townsville Family Relationship Centre; and
  • an additional $129,000 for the North Queensland Women’s Legal Service to provide legal assistance and support for victims of family violence.

The Government has also provided $55,000 to establish the Cairns Family Pathway Network to help coordinate local services across the family law system.

“These services are doing a fantastic job working together to provide expert advice and support for separating families in the local community,” Mr Turnour said.

“It is important that families have access to a coordinated range of legal, counselling and information services.”

“This funding will help families in North Queensland obtain appropriate services as quickly and efficiently as possible.”
