Arts Minister Peter Garrett today announced funding of more than $1.6 million under the Regional Arts Fund for arts and cultural activities throughout regional Australia.

Artists will work with the communities, bringing about vibrant and memorable performances, events, festivals and workshops.

“Young people, people with disabilities and Indigenous events feature strongly on the list of recipients in this funding around, amongst an array of diverse activities planned across the nation,” Mr Garrett said.

The funding is delivered by state regional arts organisation and by government art departments in the territories.

Funding for this round will go to 87 projects spread across regional and remote areas of Australia. Six of the projects are in areas classed as”very remote”, and the overall funding focuses largely on professional development for artists.

“Skills development is vital to the arts in regional areas,” Mr Garrett said. “Many regional economies rely more and more on a thriving arts sector, and it is often an important part of a regional area’s spirit and vitality – which contributes in turn to tourism.”

Highlights among the projects include:

  • Victoria: a commissioned music composition, Brolga Dreaming, will celebrate social dance life amongst older Victorians
  • Western Australia: a three-year Indigenous music development program in the Irrunytu community will contribute to a vibrant music industry in the region
  • New South Wales: a performing arts company for artists with a disability will be developed in the Riverina
  • Queensland: the Kronossauraus Korner Fossil Museum in this very remote area will conduct a series of workshops, and create a documentary to underline community pride and involvement in the rare fossil collection
  • Tasmania: a “zine” program will mentor young people and result in a session on the zine-publishing subculture, where people create small-circulation, handmade publications
  • South Australia: in the Fleurieu region, a young emerging dance artist will be mentored by three Adelaide dance artists and choreographers.
