The Premier John Brumby today turned the first sod on works at the $11.1 million Australian Centre for Democracy @ Eureka, in Ballarat.

Mr Brumby said the revitalised Australian Centre for Democracy @ Eureka would deliver significant business and tourism benefits to the Ballarat region and provide all Victorians with an opportunity for further insight into the Eureka Stockade and how it shaped Victorian democracy.

“We understand Ballarat residents are proud of their region’s history and that’s why we made the promise to support what will be a project of great benefit to all Victorians,” Mr Brumby said.

“This year marks the 155th anniversary of the Eureka Stockade, on this very site, which is one of the most significant and influential events in Victoria’s history.”

Mr Brumby said the Ballarat region would benefit significantly from increased tourism.

“When the centre is finished, it is estimated to generate and economic flow-on benefit of $12.4 million a year with 21 fulltime jobs at the centre,” he said.

“Visitations will more than triple from 38,000 to 115,000 people per year, and the construction phase will support 182 jobs.”

Mr Brumby said the new centre would function as a meeting place and become a pivotal part of Ballarat’s entertainment and cultural landscape.

“The centre will function not only as a cultural hub, but a place for the Ballarat community to meet and be entertained,” he said.

Mr Brumby said the revitalised centre would include:

  • A new 190-seat Black Box theatre;
  • New exhibition spaces and displays;
  • New function and seminar rooms;
  • A new café;
  • New administration and research areas;
  • An upgrade of existing retail and foyer spaces; and
  • Landscaping, carparking, and further amenity upgrades

Mr Brumby said the Victorian Government had committed $5 million to the project from the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund.

“We are securing Ballarat’s lifestyle by investing in cultural, entertainment and community infrastructure such as the Australian Centre for Democracy @ Eureka,” he said.

“The Government’s $5 million has been matched by the Commonwealth, with the City of Ballarat providing the remaining $1.1 million. “
