Melbourne will play host to another world-class rugby league clash when heavyweights Australia and England go head-to-head in a blockbuster at AAMI Park this October.
Joining coaches and players to promote the upcoming Four Nations Series at the stadium today, Sports Minister James Merlino encouraged Victorian sports fans to get in quick and reserve their seat for the October 31 clash against the Kangaroos’ old rivals.
“Victorians love their sport, that’s why we continue to attract the best events that build on our reputation as the sporting capital of the world,” Mr Merlino said.
“Australia has two strong sporting rivals – England and New Zealand – and Victorians have the chance to see that tradition grow at AAMI Park this year.
“We have a fantastic new stadium that matches any in Australia to watch our rectangular codes and this match promises to be another great highlight for Melbourne.”
The Four Nations Series – which runs from 23 October to 13 November – will be contested by Australia, New Zealand, England and Papua New Guinea.
Australia won the inaugural trophy last year, beating the old rival England 46-16.
“This makes their match in October at AAMI Park – our newest, world-class sports facility – an unmissable match for friends and foes alike,” he said.
The rugby league match is a highlight of a super week of sport in Melbourne that includes the Melbourne Cup Carnival and one-day cricket international between Australia and Sri Lanka.
Mr Merlino said Victorian rugby league fans had shown their support for the new AAMI Park stadium, with a sell out 30,000-strong crowd booked in to see Australia’s Kangaroos take on trans-Tasman rival New Zealand in a Test match this Friday.
“There’s no question that a rectangular pitch has been the missing link in Melbourne’s network of sporting infrastructure– and the blockbuster trans-Tasman test between the Aussies and the Kiwis will open the stadium in style,” he said.
The $267.5 million stadium has a capacity of 30,050 and promises to be one of the world’s best to watch rugby league, rugby union and soccer.
