Centre culturel Aberdeen, home of Greater Moncton’s artistic community, will undergo extensive renovations with an investment of nearly $2 million from the Government of Canada, the Province of New Brunswick and the City of Moncton.

The Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway; the Honourable Chris Collins, Minister of Local Government; and Moncton Mayor George Leblanc made the announcement today.

“The Government of Canada, through the Economic Action Plan, is taking steps to stimulate the economy, create jobs and support communities hard hit by the global economic downturn,” said Minister Ashfield. “Our federal investment of more than $1,000,000 will ensure that Centre culturel Aberdeen continues to support the many members of south eastern New Brunswick’s vibrant artistic community and the contribution they make to our region and our economy.”

“Our investment will ensure Le Centre culturel Aberdeen continues to play a vital role in the arts and cultural community,” said Collins, on behalf of Business New Brunswick Minister Victor Boudreau, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Our investment will help to improve quality of life, strengthens our communities, and helps us to work toward our goal of self-sufficiency.”

“Today is a good day for the Aberdeen Cultural Centre and for the entire community. The City of Moncton is proud to acknowledge the Aberdeen Cultural Centre’s fundamental contribution to the growth of Moncton’s arts and culture sector. We also recognize the Centre’s significance from a heritage standpoint,” said Mayor of Moncton George LeBlanc. “This funding will help the Aberdeen Cultural Centre continue to grow the arts and culture programs and opportunities for the community. The art and culture sector is a key contributor and extremely important to our quality of life and the prosperity of our community.”

The Centre culturel Aberdeen is an historic community facility in Moncton, originally built as a school in 1897. The funding will support major improvements for the historic building in order to meet safety and environment standards for public buildings. The planned upgrades will make the Centre more user-friendly. The renovations will include a complete overhaul of the building’s electrical, heating and security systems. Rooms will be repaired and refurbished to improve and maximize their usage. The project includes also the installation of an elevator for greater accessibility.

“The federal government’s announcement of funding to help renovate the Centre Culturel Aberdeen means that not only can the Centre maintain its current operations, but it can also continue to develop,” said René Légère, the Centre’s executive director. “The Government’s contribution is important as it allows us to look ahead to the future and enables us to provide the artistic community in New Brunswick’s with an unparalleled place to create and grow.”

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is contributing $500,000 toward the project under the Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) and an additional $500,000 through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s Canada Cultural Spaces Program. The Province of New Brunswick is providing $750,000 toward the project while the City of Moncton is contributing $170,000. The Centre culturel Aberdeen will complete the $2.3 million project by investing $375,000.
