Participating households will receive notification by June.

The Singapore Census of Population 2010 has begun, and selected households will receive notification letters between March and June this year.

The Census is the largest national statistical exercise conducted in Singapore and collects a wide range of information on population and households.

Starting today, a census of the Singapore population will be carried out. It is the fifth census conducted since Singapore’s independence and the fourteenth in the series of census-taking in Singapore.

Chief Statistician, Ms Wong Wee Kim, shares, “The Census of Population is the largest national statistical exercise conducted in Singapore. It collects a wide range of information on population and households. Statistics compiled from Census will serve as key inputs for policy planning and programme formulation by the public sector agencies for the population and the community. We would greatly appreciate the cooperation of the households in providing information requested for in Census 2010. ”

Census 2010 will adopt a register-based approach, similar to Census 2000. Broad characteristics of the population will be obtained from administrative records, while detailed information will be collected from some 200,000 households. Information to be collected includes data relating to demographic profile, economic status, education and transportation, among other aspects.

Notification of Households

The Singapore Department of Statistics will send out notification letters to the selected households from March to June 2010. During this period, the selected households will receive in addition to the notification letter, an information pamphlet about the survey and an internet user guide on the submission of Census 2010 returns.

Mode of Submission

The selected households can choose to submit their Census 2010 returns using one of the three modes listed below:

(a) Internet Submission

Internet submission is a convenient mode for providing the information. Available throughout the day, it allows households to submit their returns at a time that is most convenient to them. An internet user guide is provided to assist households in their submission.

(b) Telephone Interview

Households can call the toll-free Census 2010 Hotline for a telephone interview. Census 2010 interviewers may also call households who have not submitted their returns by the due-date stipulated in the notification letter. They will identify themselves as Census 2010 officers and quote the unique House Reference Number for each house before proceeding to interview the household.

(c) Face-to-Face Interview

Census 2010 interviewers will visit households that have not provided their responses by internet or telephone after a period of time. These officers will carry identification badges and letters of authorization when visiting the households. Some of these visits may be done in the evenings. Households who wish to verify the identity of Census 2010 interviewers may call the Census 2010 Hotline.

Confidentiality

Information provided for the Census 2010 is secure and protected. Responses from households will be kept in confidence in accordance with the Statistics Act (Chapter 317).
