Planning Minister Justin Madden today encouraged Victorians to have their say on the proposed Mornington Safe Harbour Development with the project’s Environment Effects Statement (EES) released for public comment.
Mr Madden said the EES would remain on display until Monday 5 July 2010 along with the proposed planning scheme amendment and permit application for the project near Mornington.
“The Mornington Harbour area is highly valued by local residents as well as people living nearby on the Peninsula and wider metropolitan area,” Mr Madden said.
“Following my decision that an EES was required for the development, I am pleased to announce that Victorians can now comment on the effects and the merits of the proposal.”
Mr Madden said the proposal was to develop a ‘safe harbour’ in the area adjoining Mornington Pier including an extension to the pier, a new public jetty and a wavescreen to the east of the pier.
“The new infrastructure would accommodate about 170 floating berths, as well as short term and emergency services berths,” he said.
Mr Madden said some of the potential impacts identified in the EES related to public amenity and the landscape, car parking, coastal processes as well as possible effects on local beaches.
“An independent panel will conduct an inquiry under the Environment Effects Act 1978,” he said.
“This inquiry will consider the EES and public submissions, conduct public hearings and then prepare a report for my consideration.”
Mr Madden said the EES, Amendment C107 and related documents may be examined during normal business hours at the following locations:
All documentation is available at the Mornington Peninsula Shire website www.mornpen.vic.gov.au.
Amendment C107 and related documents can be viewed at www.dpcd.vic.gov.au/planning/publicinspection.
The EES was prepared by the project proponent Mornington Boat Haven Limited acting on behalf of Mornington Yacht Club.
