Canadian athletes gave stellar performances in World Cup speed skating and skeleton events on the weekend.
At the speed skating long track World Cup in Hamar, Norway, on November 21 and 22, Kristina Groves won a gold medal in the women’s 1500 metre race, and Lucas Makowsky won a silver medal in the men’s 1500 metre race.
Canadian athlete Mellisa Hollingsworth took home the gold medal at the women’s World Cup skeleton competition in Lake Placid on November 20.
As Minister of State (Sport) and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to congratulate our medallists Kristina Groves, Lucas Makowsky, and Mellisa Hollingsworth and commend the other Canadian athletes who participated in these competitions.
Your hard work and dedication are producing great results. As Canadians everywhere look forward to cheering on our athletes at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, I have no doubt that we will “Own the Podium” in less than 100 days.
