The new state-of-the-art Box Hill Police Station will boost local police services for residents in the Eastern suburbs and ensure police have the resources they need to help keep local communities safe.

Police Minister Bob Cameron today officially opened the new $15.8 million Box Hill Police Complex at the corner of Whitehorse and Kangerong Roads.

“The opening today of this new 24-hour facility in Box Hill is another step in the Brumby Labor Government’s ongoing commitment to making communities such as Box Hill safer places to live and work for all Victorians,” Mr Cameron said.

“The new station will help local police continue serving their community well into the future and accommodate members of the uniform, crime investigation, traffic management, transit police, Embona Task Force and Pro-Active Programs units.”

Member for Burwood Bob Stensholt said the new station would provide a strong local police presence.

“The needs of the Box Hill community have been recognised with a bigger and better station that recognises the importance of having the latest in policing capabilities in this area,” Mr Stensholt said.

Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Brian Tee said environmentally sustainable design features of the new station include rainwater harvesting for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation and solar hot water pre-heater.”

Mr Cameron said there were now more frontline police than ever before in Victoria and the Brumby Labor Government was committed to ensuring Victoria’s police had the powers and the resources they needed to help protect communities.

“Since coming to office, our Government has committed $460 million towards the construction and refurbishment of more than 160 police stations and residences across Victoria in the State’s largest police station building program,” he said.

“We have also just increased funding to Victoria Police again with a record budget of around $2 billion announced for 2010-11.

“And it is the Brumby Labor Government that has guaranteed to deliver 1,966 additional frontline police over the next five years as the centrepiece of the Victoria Police 2010-11 budget to help make the state’s streets and communities safer.

“I commend all police officers for the great job they do protecting Victorians and hope this new station will help local police in their efforts to keep their community safe.”
