From Thursday 1 July Number 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron, currently the provider of Air Force Reserve training and administration in Victoria, will take on an expanded role in the operation of RAAF Base Williams.
Under sweeping changes announced by the Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin, AO, Number 21 Squadron (21 SQN) will integrate with Combat Support Unit (CSU) Williams to assume responsibility for managing the airfield and supporting air base operations, as well as maintaining its reserve training activities.
Combat Support Unit Williams will then be disbanded.
The current Commanding Officer (CO) of CSU Williams, Wing Commander Barbara Courtney, will become Commanding Officer of the expanded 21 SQN, while the current CO 21 SQN, Squadron Leader Marcelle Mitting, will become Flight Commander in charge of training.
Air Marshal (AIRMSHL) Binskin said the integration of the squadron will present an exciting opportunity for Victorian Air Force reservists.
“Our Air Force reservists will now have an increased opportunity to contribute to operational capability in our modern and future Air Force. 21 SQN will now have responsibility for fixed air base support at RAAF Base Williams and additional responsibilities for operational missions as well as continuing to support a Reserve training role,” AIRMSHL Binskin said.
The integration of 21 SQN and Combat Support Unit Williams, which will see the restructured squadron reassigned to Combat Support Group from Air Force Training Group, is being mirrored at Air Force bases across the country as a result of a review of Combat Support Group.
AIRMSHL Binskin said the review of Combat Support Group to ensure that it is best organised to provide both fixed base and expeditionary support for Air Force was an ideal opportunity, as part of his ‘One Team’ approach, to enhance the capability contribution, relevance and profile of the RAAF Reserve Squadrons, which included 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron.
AIRMSHL Binskin said a ceremonial parade to formally recognise the establishment of the restructured Number 21 (City of Melbourne) Squadron will be held at RAAF Base Williams on Friday 9 July.
The parade will be reviewed by Air Commander, Air Vice Marshal Mark Skidmore, AM.
