Housing Minister Richard Wynne today announced a revamp of homelessness support networks across the Hume region.
Mr Wynne praised the work of local homelessness support workers while launching the Opening Doors service model in Trawool.
“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to improve the lives of our most vulnerable people and this new service will mean they can access the supports they need much easier than in the past,” Mr Wynne said.
“Thanks to Opening Doors, people will be able to access services they need in the area where they live without having to knock on more than one door.
“Under this new service model, local services will work together to support vulnerable people across Hume experiencing homelessness or in danger of becoming homeless.”
The revamped service in the Hume region is centred in the towns of Shepparton, Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga and covers all towns across the region.
Member for Seymour Ben Hardman said Opening Doors was a significant reform to the way local agencies worked together.
“I’d like to thank the local service agencies involved in this important initiative, in particular Rural Housing Network and the workers in the local area service networks in the Hume region for their hard work and enthusiasm,” Mr Hardman said.
“Thanks to this new service model, people in the Hume area wanting assistance for themselves and their families will be connected to the right service most conveniently located to them, with 13 access points available across the region.”
As part of the Opening Doors initiative, a statewide 1800 number has been established. People wanting information about accommodation and services available in their area can call 1800 825 955 toll free.
During business hours, callers are automatically redirected to their closest support service. In the case of the Hume region, this is the Rural Housing Network.
Outside business hours, callers will be directed to a statewide after hours service operated by the Salvation Army, which can provide help to access secure overnight accommodation and provide referral to local services.
