Seniors will continue to have the opportunity to participate in and contribute to their communities thanks to Government of Canada funding for 626 new projects for Canadian seniors.
The Honourable Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State (Seniors), made this announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, today in Halifax.
“Seniors are valuable members of society who contribute a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience to their communities,” said Minister Ablonczy. “That’s why the Government of Canada is proud to invest in organizations that encourage seniors to remain engaged in their communities from coast to coast to coast.”
Minister Ablonczy made the announcement at the Northwood Broadcasting Club in Halifax, which received $8,500 in funding for its Capital Assistance project to replace outdated computer equipment and software. Through this investment, seniors will be able to continue producing and broadcasting radio programming for nearly 300,000 seniors in Atlantic Canada.
The Capital Assistance funding component of the New Horizons for Seniors Program helps non-profit organizations upgrade facilities or equipment required for existing seniors’ programs and activities. Total funding announced for these 626 projects is more than $8.5 million.
There is currently a Capital Assistance call for proposals in Quebec, which will close September 17, 2010. The next call for proposals under the Capital Assistance stream for the rest of Canada (except Quebec) is planned for late summer 2010. Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded more than 6,000 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. Last year alone, more than 100,000 seniors in over 500 communities throughout the country were involved in projects funded by the Program.
The recent Jobs and Growth Budget committed $5 million per year to increase funding for the New Horizons for Seniors Program. This will be in addition to the $35 million provided every year to support projects for seniors in communities across Canada.
