On behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Canada’s Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada.
Ms. Kelly Block, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar, awarded Ms. Cec Chambul the 2009 Parks Canada Ambassador in Education Award for Saskatchewan. This award is presented in recognition of an educator’s significant contribution towards increasing student awareness and appreciation for Canada’s natural and cultural heritage.
“Through her personal commitment to multiculturalism and outreach education Ms. Chambul is leading by example and providing inspiring experiences for teachers, students and their family members alike,” said Ms. Block. “By sharing her enthusiasm of these special places she is continually keeping history alive for future generations.”
Ms. Chambul, who has been the Community Coordinator for over six years at Confederation Park Community School, was nominated for her long-standing support of Parks Canada’s formal education and outreach programs. Over her career, Ms. Chambul has organized hundreds of student’s trips to Batoche National Historic Site and has been an advocate in bringing Parks Canada to the school to share with thousands of students and the community.
“The diverse history and natural beauty of Canada’s national historic sites should be shared with all Canadians,” continued Ms. Block. “Ms. Chambul has enriched the next generation of Canadians by building their awareness and appreciation for these special places and events in history.”
The Parks Canada in Schools program aims to reach every student at least once during his or her school years. Curriculum-based, teacher-tested resources are available at national parks, national historic sites and online at Parks Canada’s Teacher Resource Center (www.pc.gc.ca/education). It is through the commitment of inspiring coordinators like Cec Chambul that Parks Canada is able to deliver memorable learning experiences for future decision makers.
Parks Canada works to ensure Canada’s historic and natural heritage is presented and protected for the enjoyment, education and appreciation of all Canadians, today and in the future. Through a network of 42 national parks, 167 national historic sites, and three national marine conservation areas, Parks Canada sets the stage and invites Canadians and people around the world to engage in personal moments of inspiring discovery at our treasured natural and historic places.
